Dr. Paul Eakin grew up in Oregon, where he attended Oregon State University and graduated with a degree in biochemistry and biophysics. He then attended The University of Iowa College of Medicine and ventured out to Hawai‘i for his Pediatric Residency. This was followed by a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. In 2006, he returned “home” and joined the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Faculty at the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine. In 2014, he became the Associate Director of Emergency Medicine at Kapi‘olani Medical Center and the Division Head of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the University of Hawai‘i Department of Pediatrics. In 2021, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics.
He is a fellow of both the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). He is a USACS Scholar and has presented at several USACS Assemblies. He has served as the President and Board Director of the Hawai‘i ACEP Chapter as well as the national ACEP Pediatric Emergency Medicine Committee. He is currently a board member of Kap’olani Medical Center for Women and Children. He has also served as a member of the AAP PREP E-Med editorial board for six years. He has written multiple textbook chapters and articles and has given pediatric emergency medicine presentations both nationally and internationally. His outside interests include struggling to learn Japanese, traveling, running, and finding the best ramen in Honolulu.
